Prosperous villages are not unicorns.
Villages prosper when they can generate wealth, govern their own development and sustain progress for generations. Commons builds the technology that puts all three in the village's own hands.
Three things villages need to thrive and prosper.
Each one matters on its own. A village prospers only when it has all three: income it earns, decisions it makes, and gains that survive the next bad year.
Villages need more than livelihoods. They need thriving local economies where agriculture, rural enterprises and local talent create sustainable incomes and wealth. Most of the value of what a village grows is still added, and earned, somewhere else. The shift: from subsistence to enterprise and economic opportunity.
Thriving villages are built by communities that can organise, make decisions, manage resources, and work with governments, markets and civil society to solve their own problems. The institutions already exist in almost every village. They are rarely given the tools to run themselves. The shift: from fragmented interventions to empowered communities and accountable institutions.
Villages need reliable access to water, education, healthcare, technology and essential services, alongside the ability to adapt to climate change and changing economic realities. A gain that disappears with one failed monsoon was never really a gain. The shift: from short-term development gains to long-term resilience and well-being.
Where the value of a harvest is earned.
Today the village grows it and collects it. Processing, branding and selling happen somewhere else, and so does the income.

The institutions a village already has.
What most of them lack is information, money they control, and a record of their own decisions.
Gram panchayat
SHGs and federations
Farmer producer organisations
School management committee
Water and sanitation committee
Health and nutrition committee
Youth and volunteer groups
The same money, spent for the long term.
A gain that disappears with one failed monsoon was never really a gain. The shift: from short-term development gains to long-term resilience and well-being.
Villages prosper when they can generate wealth, govern their own development, and sustain progress for generations.
Three questions, one village.
Income without institutions is captured by whoever is already powerful. Institutions without resilience are undone by the first bad year. Everything we build answers to all three.
From development delivered to development owned.
None of this asks villages to do something new. Gram sabhas, SHGs and producer organisations already exist. The shift is in who holds the information, the money and the plan.
What a village can see about itself.
One view of the village's economy, institutions and resilience, in its own language, shared with the gram sabha before it is reported anywhere else. And for the women who run its enterprises, the business in their pocket.

Service design
Journeys designed around the people moving through them.

Digital platforms
Built to be adapted, extended and used by the organisations doing the work.

Field operations

Built for the three needs, on one record.

A B2B and B2C marketplace that connects farmers, FPOs and artisans to buyers: storefront, bulk trade, FPO systems, traceability and fast farmer payouts.

A complete ERP for Farmer Producer Organisations: members and shares, input business, procurement, warehouse, sales, accounting, GST, compliance and payroll, linked to a farmer.

Rural development on one record: the village institutions that carry the last mile of every programme, and the systems that hold them up.

An SMC app for government schools: meetings, agendas, actions, school development plans and budgets, with power in parents’ hands and AI that learns from other schools.

Run a natural farming programme end to end: farmer and plot records, advisories, field visits, practice adoption and the income it changed.

A distributed call centre app for champion mothers who counsel mothers of first-generation learners: family profiles, child assessments, auto dialer, recording and AI call analysis.

A district, a block, a cluster of gram panchayats or a single village: we will tell you which of the three needs we would start with, and what it would take.
